Coalition of HOPES
(Help Offer People Essential Services)
Phone: 717-248-2552
In Mifflin and Juniata counties the Coalition of HOPES has been formed to help as many residents as possible continue having basic needs. A single point of contact has been established for the Mifflin Juniata Human Services, Shelter Service, PA Career Link - TIU and United Way of Mifflin Juniata. The system will streamline help for basic needs throughout the year and heat assistance during the winter months. This will guide our citizens through the many resources available while avoiding duplication of service or abuse of service. Our goal is to help you become self sufficient.
-
Housing: if you have an eviction notice or are about to have your home repossessed
-
Electricity: if you have a shut off notice or need to be on a monthly payment plan for Penelec
-
Utilities: if you have a shut off notice for gas or water
-
Heat: if you do not qualify for Liheap and are over age 65 or have children ages 14 and under in the home
-
Spending Plan: if you ask for assistance more than once in a 24 month period or have excessive bills you may be referred to Case Management
The Energy Bank is completely funded by local donations. The United Way of Mifflin-Juniata has agreed to be the repository for all donations to the fund. All donations to the Energy Bank should be directed to the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata at 13 East Third Street, Lewistown, PA 17044. Donors are asked to make a notation on the memo line of your check or include a note to indicate donations are directed to the energy bank.
People calling for the Energy Bank assistance will be instructed to first apply to the federal Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applicants will be instructed to go directly to the Assistance office in their county to fill out an application. No appointment is necessary. Applicants should take along the last 30 days of pay stubs and a copy of their fuel bill.
The money from the Energy Bank will be disbursed through The Coalition of HOPES. The agency will review income levels and evaluate prior access to assistance. Emergency plans are in place to address after hours and weekend needs. The EFSP Board is working with local churches and the New Shelter Service to provide a warm place for children, families and seniors until resources can be allocated.
